Back-To-School Letter from Jayme Caughron, GRTS Director
Monday, August 5, 2013

New Year - Fresh Start! Grand River Technical School (GRTS) faculty and staff look forward to meeting new students and greeting our returning students on Wednesday, August 21! We welcome secondary students from 16 sending high schools and adult students from throughout the Midwest.

Seventy to 80 percent of all jobs require skilled technical training. In order for our students to be competitive, we have designed curriculum that provides a combination of strong technical and academic training that will lead to employment or post-secondary training. To meet employer requests, our teachers work diligently with students to help them master the technical skills required in their chosen fields. GRTS instructors also provide instruction in technical math, applied communications and computer literacy - basic skills that all technical employees need. A portion of classroom assignments in all programs focus on problem solving, interpersonal relations and work ethic. Many students will earn industry-recognized credentials and certifications and leave GRTS with up to 30 hours of free articulated college credit.

Each year we are faced with the challenges of keeping up with instructor and program certifications, accreditations, and testing requirements, all while helping students develop the technical skills industry requires. We persist in helping students successfully complete their programs and placing them in good jobs or encouraging them to pursue additional training or education, doing all that we can to address the skills gap that is rampant and predicted to get worse in the years ahead. We are excited about the opportunities for success available to students attending GRTS. Our staff is committed to providing a quality technical education and to working with the academic teachers, area businesses and colleges to prepare our high school and adult graduates for a successful career and a rewarding life. We welcome the challenge of preparing students for the exciting, rewarding careers of the 21st century!

This will be my 16th year at Grand River Tech, and I am as excited this year as I was my very first year when I came here to teach Business Technology! I have enjoyed working for the last 9 years as Assistant Director, and it is now an honor to serve as Director of GRTS. I am happy to welcome Adam Wolf as the new Assistant Director. Many folks in this community may already know Adam since he is a Chillicothe native and attended GRTS throughout high school. We are fortunate to have someone with Adam's commitment to career and technical education; his commitment to students, staff, school and community; and his experience in shop programs.

Feel free to come visit us any time; call or stop by the school to schedule a tour of any or all of our programs. It's exciting to see students at work developing their technical skills through real-life scenarios in shops, labs, and classrooms. For detailed information regarding our programs and student activities and to learn more about our instructors, please check out this website or visit us on social media.
